and bring on Duke Nukem Forver :-)
DNF was doomed (no pun intended) to failure. They should of thought up a better name so the acronym didn't match a popular sporting term 'Did Not Finish'. Kaz |

Lord Baz:
We do read the forum, but your post was just a forum thread whereas GM obviously felt that the subject was worthy of a news item so he posted a news item about it (which then automatically becomes a forum thread). Besides, he posted his item at 7am, I'll wager he hadn't looked at our forum yet, he probably saw the news on Blues and got so excited that he posted a news item straight away! It's really your own fault for being up so damn early ;-) |

this game better be good because i think ID software will loose alot of money for overhyping a bad game no? as for HL2 as they there are 3 things cirtain in life, Death, Taxes & Games that take ages to come out because the company keeps making exuses.

The release date is August 2.
Which is today (in the US) so DOOM 3 is released TODAY. They won't be selling it before the release date. |

one way that you can usually get the game before the release date is to have a friend that works at a computer shop (ie EB) and say "so... how bout that doom3 aye?" and they say "yeah... aye"

Not sure where the August 13 date comes from... everthing I have read has said that there was going to be a worldwide release on August 2 (august 3 for us in Australia due to time difference).
I was expecting it to be released today as I stated earlier in this thread... |

The 13th came from a press release from Todd Hollenshead. He said the 2nd for North America, 7th-10th for Europe (I think), and the 13th for the rest of the world. Stores in the US were selling before the 2nd though.

Ah, well, the August 2 worldwide date came from the distributor...
Some stores in the states were prbably a bit naughty in selling it early. Nevermind, it's out now and that's all that matters! :-) |

I've just been playing Doom 3 for the last hour or so and I must say that it certainly does have atmosphere. I was seriously shaking while playing the game. Freaky stuff. great game so far. The graphics are mind blowing, with my Athlon XP 3000+ and GeForce FX 5950 Ultra doing a pretty good job ;) The game certainly got the heart rate going. I'm so exhausted that I need a bloody break. I may play it tonight with the lights out. No doubt I'll have nightmares as I sleep. Can't wait for 4 way deathmatches at the next ACTGN LAN. Would be good to have a kind of Doom 3 "world cup". Great Game so far. Oh the atmosphere. Only gripe is that it won't let me change the controlls to the way I specifically use "The arrow keys". Oh well, I have to learn the WSAD I guess.. Back to the game for me..

multiplayer only supports 4 players?!?!? wtf? Dude, there was never any intent to give it a decent multiplayer engine. The focus was on the single player game play and 'story' line. Didn't you follow its development? |

yay... f***ing POS 'replacement' PSU keeps f***ing out on me - i cant play Doom3 with it.
How in the f*** do they expect a 20 dollar '400W' PSU power a 3ghz/9800XT system. f***ing dodgy bastards (the shop that is). There is a reason why i bought and Antec Tru480. f***ERS |

I want to set my left and right arrow keys to move left and right, but the config keeps saying that I picked shift...
Anyways, I'm still playing the game. I decided to install it on a lesser machine for some multiplay action against my brother. The lowend system I have has an Athlon 1.33Ghz CPU and a GeForce 4 Ti4400. I find it still reasonably playable, even on this low end system. Oh yeah, multiplayer is kewl because you can shoot out the lights ;) Then you can just hide and wait :) |

Only GeForce cards supported are:
All GeForce 3/Ti series All GeForce 4 MX series All GeForce 4/Ti series All GeForce FX Series GeForce 6800 Radeons supported are : 8500 9000 9200 9500 9600 9700 9800 This info is on the box. But with any of these cards, I recon that the 1.33Ghz would be playable. Not smooth, but playable. |

P4 3.2Ghz
1Gb PC2700 DDR SD RAM ATI Radeon 9700Pro 128Mb Runs sweet... Not full everything at the highest res, but still sweet enough for my liking. The thing that pisses me off most about my system, is that still nobody (that I know of) makes a decent wattage PSU for a Shuttle PC :-( One day Gadget, one day. Until then, I have just enough power to run the 9700 Pro and won't be upgrading it any time soon. I miss my Antec True Blue 480 sometimes. Just not the big, bulky, Lian Li PC65 it was in. I love my shuttle :D I ended up selling the whole system (case, PSU, GeForce4 MX440 64Mb, Epox mobo, CD burner and DVD Rom, but no HDD) for $450. |

Imp. You can run X800 in a stock shuttle powersupply I've seen systems running them...and Shuttle are apparently not far off from selling a 350W powersupply.

@ Fatbastard
I guess I could've put "Only GeForce cards that ARE supported:" or "Only GeForce Cards Supported ARE:", or even put a The in front there, but this isn't an english class and I thought that all the people on here had enough intelligence to decifer what I meant, but then again, I could be mistaken. :) @Guitar Man I only had about 20 minutes of play today and yes I did see the freaky thing in the mirror. I actually though I died for some stupid reason.. Oh and a Tip, when you get your first chain gun, turn around quickly ;) last edited by KrasH at 17:30:46 04/Aug/04 |

OMG!!!
This game rocks, and let me tell you if you aint playin it with surround sound, you aint playin it. ___________________________________ 04:00hrs SoDa sits in his darkend computer room glow of the pc screen the only light. Whispers and moans fill the room as the surround sound does its thing. Suddenly the screen goes black and an imp attacks from behind. 07:30hrs Loud knocking on the front door, a bleary eyed SoDa answers and is confronted with an angry mother that wants to know why her child was woken to the sound of a screaming profanity at 04:00hrs, followed by screams of more profanity and then silence. SoDa closes the door and goes back to sleep. __________________________________ I may have to compete with -=GM=- to review this one. i likey. One of the problems when you know 2 languages with quite different grammer. But yeah, I take your point. I will not cut and paste from the doom 3 readme again :( They got it wrong on there too.

OK - back on topic...
So just how dark is this game meant to be? I'm getting so pissed off that I can't see the s*** I'm meant to shoot. WTF can't I use the flashlight and gun at the same time? You know, crossed wrists! I'm not that far into the game but it better get brighter! last edited by Improvize at 19:13:41 06/Aug/04 |

It doesn't take that long to fastswitch back to your gun.
Somethingawful did a big long article on all the reasons the marine couldn't carry both a flashlight and a gun: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=1832 |

That article is pretty friggin funny but I have to say I agree with it!
We have the technology to travel to, live on and perform advanced scientific experiements (including opening a portal to Hell) but we havn't invented integrated night vision for our marines! WTF? |

It's pretty obvious that they made a design decision not to let you use your flashlight and gun at the same time. Not being able to see what you're shooting at makes it all the more scary and uncomfortable. . .which is the whole point.

"....it sounds like the flashlight acts like a weapon in the game, which means that while it is selected, no other weapon is active or available to fire. Those guns are all resting comfortably in the fancy trans-dimensional back pocket that somehow stores a mega arsenal and makes it weigh less than a feather...." That has always bemused me a little with id's games... The arsenal the dude can just carry around is HUGE! :P |

The Duct Tape mod may interest you guys:
http://ducttape.glenmurphy.com/ It allows you to use the flashlight and machine gun at the same time. I guess we know who's afraid of the dark now, don't we? :P |

No! :P
Not SCARED of the dark. Just pissed off that I can't see what I'm meant to be shooting at. I'm actually a little suprised. The game isn't at all as 'scary' as I expected it to be, or as the originals were when I was young and playing it late at night on the good old 486. |

As soon as you start thinking about it as an action game - like how you have to strafe right to avoid imp fireballs and such - it loses a lot of the fear factor.

Do you realise how much integrated night vision would cost for all the marines at the UAC? Obviously it wasn't on the top of their expenses list. And you can imagine if one marine got it, all the other marines would then complain and want it too.

portholes? You mean portals?
I don't think they intended to open a portal to hell. They were simply at the forefront of teleportation technology and hence pooling alot of their resources into that. No need to go and waste money on un-needed integrated night vision gear. Flashlights are much cheaper :) |

They were messing with a portal to hell... there's a PDA with a message about Delta Labs needing the supplies of religious equipment they'd ordered from Earth pronto - presumably they were doing experiments and whatnot.
[edit] Oh yeah - since you're stuck with carrying a light source with both hands, why not pick up some of the better lights you see, like that big lantern in that stupid bit in Alpha 2 (I think) where you're meant to protect the light-carrying guy against the Imps? last edited by Bumster at 09:31:06 08/Aug/04 |

yeah my mate downloaded that 'duct tape' mod. I dislike always having the torch out, i dunno, loses its feel.
Im quite enjoying the game because now i actually understand the whole story behind it. |

Is anyone else having problems where the game just freezes? I kill the task in task manager and restart and all is fine.
It seems to be a totally random thing. P4 3.3Ghz 1Gb RAM ATI Radeon 9700Pro 128Mb Cheers, Imp |

I have similar problems, the game just drops out to windows. I am not sure wether this is power supply related or not now.
its a 3ghz/9800XT/1Gb (atm being powered by a yumcha omni 400W psu - still awaiting my true480 to be returned) In application events, i get 3 of these each time it crashes. The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 6. My Flatmate who has a 2.4/9800Pro seems to crash on the rare occasion. i havent seen the error message either. I am formatting my box soon, so i shall let you know it was just a windows problem or not. |

Well, on my lower end system, which was an Athlon 1.33Ghz, but now has an Athlon XP 2400+ after reading a FAQ on getting that previously "unsupported" cpu supported on my motherboard (mouthful), it has something like 390MB or there abouts of RAM, I decided to add another 128MB DIMM I had laying around, to bring it up to 512MB and DOOM 3 hated it. The game crashed back to windblows desktop all the time. More than likely a problem with the motherboard and 2 different types of DIMMS (diff manufacturers), but other games weren't as picky, although far cry also died in the arse. So I had to remove the 128MB sim :( Oh well, the game works now..
Just a little tidbit, After adding the faster CPU Athlon 1.33Ghz to Athoon XP 2400+ (2Ghz) the computer was certainly faster. Timedemo'd Doom 3 and got the same fps numbers.. So I am thinking that CPU isn't the defining factor of getting extra speed in the game. It certainly does treat the GFX card with contempt.. The GFX card seems to be the real bottleneck for this game :) Unlike the odd other game which can reep benfits from either CPU or GFX card upgrades.. Just a note to people using the "Flashlight" mod. It doesn't seem to like multiplayer, unless everyone has the mod or don't have the mod. It doesn't like having 1 person with the mod and one without.. Just won't connect. |

Woohoo! Doom 3 actually gets better the further you get along. Running around Delta labs with some nasty weapons and even nastier monsters.
The Martian Buddy code came in very handy :-) The game managed to make me jump and about damn time too :-) The later levels design screams out Aliens. Check your corners. Kaz |
