The hall we use is booked on the 27th of November meaning we need to push our date back a week to the 4th of December.

Why not go to another venue?

Oh and now that the warmer months are here, what's the a/c situation? Also, can we change the rules to make it possible for someone to be kicked out if their personal hygene is a standard similar to that of a dung beatle?

Cheers...

Another place of that size would cost us a lot more, not sure on the a/c, and I like the booting idea.

i believe it's spelt "beetle" unless you're talking about that little english band that was popular in the 60's - 70's

edit: and i don't care if the place has a/c or not, i'm going to bring my own fan

EPIC yet?

G0t p30p13?

Basically until we see a massive increase in numbers, we aren't even considering another venue, especially not EPIC, as we can't afford it.

I find it a little confusing that you say you can't afford it when you used to be able to run events at other venues while only charging $5 and $10 but now are charging $20 (%15 for members)...

How much does PLI actually cost?

hmm I cant remember exact numbers but I think it was in the order of $1500-2000 + change and climbing unfortunately...but that is not the only thing that costs anyway... add switches/power/tables/hall hire so yes it does add up..I can remember what break even is in terms of players but whatever we make is peanuts and used for future PLi and maybe some hardware if we ever get enough to actually afford any..

Imp, events at EPIC were always more expensive than "normal" events. The first one, in the Quokka pavillion, was $10 per player, at a time when all our other events were $5. The first NerdFest @ CANCON was $25 for three days - I'm pretty sure the cheapest we've ever run at EPIC was $20 per player. (Venue hire, table hire, PLI, and power/air charges have all gone up since then.)

Dunno if others would agree, but I think ***up to*** $20 per day is reasonable, depending what you get from it.

Last time I was at ACTGN I was getting pings of 80ms in Half-Life engine games (awhile ago), and slightly better in Return to Castle Wolf.
Although back then ADSL was a dream, and pings of 175 - 250 ms online with far less data-rate where common by comparison.

I've had D-Link Gigabit backbone (only 8 ports / 16gpbs switching) ever since that day at backyard style events.

Don't get me wrong I like ACTGN events, esp back then, 300 people in EPIC, computers, presentations, not sleeping for 3 days (back when this was permitted), all good fun :)

Just think the backbone (100mbps switches) got a bit flooded with all the leaching, and possible virus outbreak (nothing serious, but it only takes 1 PC to hit the network I guess :P)

Ahhh good old days (I'm 22yo in Feb 2005 so not as young as some).

What gear are ACTGN running now ? Do they own any decent switches or borrow them ?
I heard/read somewhere they got 16 port (if not more) Gigabit backbone switches which might even have aggregate capability to combine several Gbps ports into one fast link to stop saturation, any info on this ?

When a mate gets back from the US in a few months, might get a "retro" group together at next large event....maybe ?????

i dare say that lan with 80ms pings is probably the event where the whole thing came to a screeching halt becaus e of some sus cabling?

er... actgn have had uber switches for ages man.... wtf you on about?

The only mega 300 player lan was the first cancon which was back when i had a Athlon600!

Pings are always like, 20 tops.

I think they are running gigabit switchs... But in terms of ping times I'm not complaining. At the last ACTGN I went to, I swear that the ping times were showing up as virtually 0 (ie very low ping times). I was very impressed.

OT: What ping times are people getting online. The other day I was playing some UT2004 Onslaught, and I swear that I was getting sub 20ms ping times (512k adsl). Not bad in my opinion, concidering that until a few days ago the best pings I could get from dialup were about 170ms - 200ms. About just over 200ms was the usual.
