Topic: ACTGN's final 'Regular' LAN

Greetings all,

The ACTGN admin team has done some soul searching over the last couple
of months and we have made some descisions about the future of the
ACTGN.

We have decided that there is no longer enough interest in LAN gaming
for us to continue running events every 6-8 weeks and as a result we are
planning to move to a bi-annual format.

With this in mind we feel that we are best off running these two events
in conjunction with other gaming events, namely the Canberra Games
Festival and CANCON.

With only 2 events per year and running them under larger events we will
no longer require our own public liability insurance for the entire year
and will only need to arrange PLI for the two events we do run
individually.
Without a need for ongoing PLI we no longer need to be an incorporated
association, so we have decided to dissolve the ACTGN association.

Our current PLI runs out on the 22nd of March so we have time for one
last 'regular' LAN! the thing is though, it's going to be far from
regular! we are going to farewell the association in the style of our
old-skool LANS
:-)

For starters, we have some money saved up to pay PLI that we no longer
require so the pricing of this LAN is going to be a little different...
it's going to be old-skool pricing!

that's a $5 entry fee for lanners! and for those that hold ACTGN VIP
cards, entry is FREE!

Also, we are going to have a big BBQ for dinner that will be FREE for
all attendees including FREE drinks!

Just like the old-skool LANs there will be no organised tournaments,
just a whole bunch of people getting together to have some fun playing
games. We will however attempt, at various times during the event, to
get as many people as possible into one particular game server just for
the fun of it.

There will still be some lucky door prizes to give away too!

The event will begin at 9am on the 12th of March 2005 at the AIE. The
official event closing time will be 2am Sunday, but it may very well go
past that time as some of the Admins may not want to stop gaming at 2am
;-)

Rego will be opening up very soon now so be ready!

Very well done admins! This means that I'll be making a return to the LANs even with a s*** computer!
Great move!

THAT'S f***IN FANTASTIC NEWS!!!

Only damn problem for me is I won't be in the country... I fly out on the 9th :-( I guess I'll just have to put up with skiing in Austria instead :-(

I'll be at the bi-annual events for sure though!!!

This is indeed great news. Well done and thank you to the Admins.

With only 2 lans a year, that should mean more people can afford to come along. Coupled with my recent successful employment, this year is starting off nicely.

have you been to a lan recently diablo?? noticed the apparant lack of attendees?

i think having two lans a year is a good idea, since regular gaming lans is a bit much since most people will just stay at home on their broadband. But with two a year it gives people the lanning experience but not having to keep forking out the cash (both from the players and admins point of view)

hopefully this will bring lans back (or at least close) to what they used to be like :) looks like thats the plan and i reckon it will work

great job guys :)

I think one of the problems however with 2 events a year, is that people are going to forget about ACTGN over a 6 month period, and it's going to be hard to revive interest into those people. So can the admins please make sure that they give lots and lots of notice when the next event is going to be held to get word of mouth around the gaming community, plus as much advertising as you can.

2 LANs a year is pretty poor.

Considering, that this year there wont be a CANCON, will there?

ACTGN has gone downhill since last year. Everyone will start going to the NACTLAN soon.

Long live ACTGN.

Everyone will start going to the NACTLAN soon

That's because NACTLAN is basically what the old skool NF and LF LANS used to be before ACTGN, before a no-leeching policy, before PLI etc... Basically what people LOVE!

You're right. I think this will increase interest in NACTLAN.

But ultimately LANing is on the way out. With the everr increasing number of people on broadband, LANing will fade into history within 5 years.

To be perfectly honest, I wish the NACTLAN team all the best.
I think they are completely mad for allowing and promoting illegal file sharing but that's their choice.
Still, at least they are sensible enough to have PLI (at least I presume they have PLI based on their price for events).
If NACTLAN events see an increase in attedance because of our change to a bi-annual format that's great and I'm happy for them.

And Imp, I totally agree, LAN gaming is becoming a thing of the past. Technology has rendered it obsolete for most people and the only people left that are still interested in LAN gaming are either dialup users or people who genuinely enjoy the social atmosphere of a LAN.

hope to see some of you lot there on the 12th :-)

Umm first of all i'd like to make something clear...We enforce a non-leeching of copyrighted policy just as much as ACTGN does...We are under the law just like any other lanning group...

The only difference between actgn lans and nactlans that I can tell are the tournaments...At nactlan we have tried holding them but really there wasn't much interest and since we are only a small group of people, its hard trying to get everyone playing the same game...Also, we don't have dedicated servers like actgn does so one of the admins usually has to sit out during the old tournies and let their computer be used as a server...so yeah tournaments are a no go for us at the moment...

It would be nice for us to have some cisco gear to monitor ports, etc. but we really don't have the money for anything like that...

oopps, I thought NACTLAN was formed by a bunch of people that were on the same DC hub and the primary focus of the LAN was for filesharing. Perhaps I'm confused with some other LAN then?
Mobsta

We started out as a small lan only for Netspace users but then decided to open up our lans to others which is exactly when had to sit down, get some rules going so we won't get our asses in trouble...Our primary focus has never been file sharing and never will be...Our lans are only for gaming and gaming only and we try and enforce that to the best of our ability...

Damn Damn Damn I'll be heading up to sydney on the 12th so I won't be able to go. This will be the first ACTGN LAN I'll miss since moving to Canberra!

No to happy about the move to two LANS a year either but I appreciate why it has to happen.

Mobsta I'm curious about the NACTLAN. Do you still have to pre pay cos' this was the main thing that turned me off going before? Also what time do generally finish up on Saturday night (even if this is just the "official" time)?

Well I must say that this LAN is going to be great, most of all with the prices and stuff. It will be very sad to see the the good lan go, but we gave it our best.

At least we get CANCON back, I hope its going to be a 3 day event again like the good old days. And having only 2 events per year will get ppl back into it I hope.

Only prob with all this is that I'm going to have to get ADSL now. lol

Admins, is CANCON going to be a 3 day event again??

What is with people saying there is no more actgn.

Its still there

They've just changed when they wanna run it. Which is finnnne and better for the most of us, i mean what can possibly clash with cacon... its in the middle of the summer in the school holidays... :O

Besides, how many people that have posted in this thread have attended more than 2 lans in the past year?

This is exactly why we made this move, there only seems to be about a dozen or so people who actually still want to atttend LANs that are on every 6 weeks or so. Most of you only attend one or two events a year so there is no good reason for us to run any more events than that :-)

Looks like my other expensive hobbies will got more time given to them.

Damn. It's REALLY expensive.

NB: What about all the 'members' you know the guys who paid their money expecting to at least break even on even entry frees. We haven't reached that point yet. Will members get into future events free, or is this freebia a once off??? details please.

Judging by that line, i take it that these hobbies are either drugs or alcohol. Possibly both :P

Though you do raise a good point, but im sure it was only like 15 bucks that we paid (whats that, half a bottle of vodka?). Which means we get our moneys worth in 18 Months.. assuming you attend all of em. But 3 Free lans would do me fine.

Oh, and how many memberships were made?
I was 007 or something. I dunno where i put it though.

Oh yeah, I better be at the next LAN. Grug still has my videocard...

I think having 2 lans a year is a better idea. I mean, lanning really is dead. Well in canberra, no one cares for it. The gaming community now consists of s*** kids at lan cafes. I dunno... *shrug* i might go to this one. I just dont care for it anymore.

its quite funny actually, one of the guys from my work has done all that stuff (he did a mega expensive hotel managment school in the Swiss alps) and while talking about skiing he said "man, australia has better ski runs than austria... its just they have snow alot more of the time than us"

so... bad luck to you kris, you want everyone to be jealous of you so you can feel good about your fraudulant self and bolster your ego, but its not working. I think i speak for the whole forum when i say, "get over yourself loser".

Yeah um riiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

This is where I'll be going. Show me ANYWHERE in Australia that is even remotely as good and I won't go to Austria.

If this is what you're comparing Austria (or any European or Northa American apline resort) to then you're dreaming if you think the skiing is better here. That or you simply don't appreciate what GOOD skiing is.

This guy you were talking to was either being sarcastic and you didn't pick up on it, isn't actually a skier and therefore wouldn't know s***, or is a being complete f***tard (in much the same way you are)!

Wagrain in Austria (where I'll be) has 350 square kilometres of skiiable terrain (860km of runs) compared with that of Australia's largest skii resort (Perisher Blue) which has just 12.45 square kilometres of skiiable area. Wagrain has 260 lifts compared with 50 at Perisher Blue.

While at the similar altitude, Wagrain is a lot closer to the Arctic Circle than Australia's resorts are to Antarctica and therefore it's a lot colder (and dryer) hence better and more snow.

Wagrain average snow fall: 600cm
Perisher Blue average snow fall: 191cm

In short, what you were told is the complete opposite of what is correct.

Only if you're a s*** skier! Trees provide protection from high winds... That's why baron is bad... Get a bad day and don't bother trying to head outside.

Trees provide good shelter so even on the bad days you can make the most of things.

"In short, what you were told is the complete opposite of what is correct." (You might want some salt with these words Imp)

"Wagrain in Austria (where I'll be) has 350 square kilometres of skiiable terrain (860km of runs)...
Wagrain has 260 lifts compared with 50 at Perisher Blue. "

This http://www.goski.com/rau/wagrain.htm
This http://travel.yahoo.com/p-ski-534089-wagrain_ski_resort-i
And this http://www.onthesnow.com/AT-AT/721/

would suggest that just ain't so...

The best number is 105 lifts for a nine village area... but around 50-55 for Wagrain...
350 kilometres of runs NOT 860 with a longest run of 6kms - Perisher's longest is 3... but Thredbo has a 5.9... and 8-10 is common in NZ.
350 hectare NOT 350 square kilometres - 350 hectare is ONLY 3.5 square kilometres - So Perisher is nearly 12 times bigger. Methven in NZ has 1000 square kilometres...

So in reality, what you get in Wagrain is more runs crowded in to a smaller area, with more people... you won't need to worry about trees... the thermal mass of the people will keep you warm...

"In short, what you were told is the complete opposite
of what is correct."

europe is generic and gay, the only reason to go there would be to:
a) prove you have a big e-penis
b) you cant get laid in australia so you have to go pay for some austrian hill ladies (the ones with the hairy arm-pits)
or c) imp is a d*******.

And just to stay on topic,
Even if there were a bi-annual LAN event in somewhere original and cool, like cambodia, i dont think i would bother going. Can leech everything on cd or dvd at the markets for less than 5 minuites work. Sif bother downloading on lan?!?!?

oh yeah, i think the admins should also oldskool the lan by turning a blind eye to leeching, however not endorsing it. just this once. Just tell everyone it has to be legal stuff only... :D

your right, only been to europe 3 times for a total of 7 months... everyone goes to europe, its the same as every bloody city... london is just stinkier and louder, and paris is just london, but people speak french! sure they have fancy monuments and old buildings, but every country has that s*** and its all the same! English country-side is just the same as australia, but greener, holland just has windmills sprinkled around, and in france, they just speak french!

My point is, I hate imp, he is a little f***** (his bundle of sticks is little anyway) and i hope he crashes into a tree and dies!
