Hello everyone,

Given the current interest in LANning in the ACT, the ACTGN admin team has decided to call it a day.

We will no longer be running any events.

The last event saw less than 50 attendees and the trend is that numbers continue to decline.
Our next event was to be held at CANCON, where we would have needed over 100 people to attend just to cover the costs of the venue.
The ACTGN admin team have decided that the risk of running at a loss is far too great for a LAN at CANCON, so the event has been canned.

As you are all aware, we cannot afford our own PLI anymore, so the next opportunity for a LAN would have likely been the next Canberra Games Festival which is an entire year away.

The reality is that in a years time, there will only be less people attending and we would then be running at a loss even at that LAN.

The bottom line is we can't break even on expenses anymore, so there will no longer be any ACTGN events.

We hope you had fun with us over the last 6 years or so and we hope that we now leave you with many fond memories of those good times.

Farewell all and happy gaming.

Damn, didn't make it to the next CANCON!

I'm partly guilty, my computer is 5 years old, hard drives are constantly full of crap, hence hardly any space for games. :/

The sticker on my monitor says November 2003... That was a while ago. I've been regretting not going to that BBQ LAN for a while ago now, looks like I will be for a little longer!

I would happily like to give a big, THANK YOU to all the admins for their effort and time over the past many years for the many fun time and memories that were had.

Cheers!

I think everyone has seen this coming for a while, but it's when there is complete closure that it hits home. I, and my mates that came with me in the past have had many years of enjoyment thanks to all you admins and other attendees, and we'd all like to thank you for your hardwork and dedication over the years. Good luck with your future endeavours and I wish you all the best of luck.

'tis a shame. Thanks for the memories.

I was one of the guilty ones.

I (and I presume most) never 'grew out' of gaming we just had to move with the times. Gaming from home, whether 24/7 or just fitting it around everything else, has become every bit as enjoyable (admittedly in a slightly different way) as the old LANs. This is a shame for the local LANing community but a great innovation in many other respects.

In lieu of LANing, Hang gliding has become my poison. If anyone feels like trading a hall for a hill I'd be happy to (insert l337 expletive here) j00!

LANfest, Nerdfest, ACTGN - Thanks again.

hang gliding kicks paraglidings arse by a long shot. Faster, more manouverable, way more exciting. your not just dangling under a parachute, your skimming accross the face of a slope, just meters from the ground going 60+km/h with full flying control to soar up another 100 feet at any moment!

my point is, with or without actgn, I will still always hate imp with an absolute passion. I hope you step on a landmine you !(&&(@#%&@#%@($&*

So how many people got laid at ACTGN over the years? I know of atleast two...

i think nactlan would be operation rather smoothly :) considering its more setup for a smaller event and is hence easier to cover the costs...

i can still remember that time though that the aircon busted open and water came pouring out from the ceiling :O one nactlan moment i wont be forgetting :P

While it is a shock, it was inevitable.

Fast, affordable broadband, rising system requirements and that damn PLI s***e. I've attended probably 4 of the 6 years and the admins always did a bang up job.

Thank you for all your time, effort and sacrifice.

Well people we've reached a turning point.

We've lost our big lanning.

While i can see the reasons why and agree that they are valid I still can't help but feel that it came to a bitter end rather than with one last awesome lan that all would be remembered from the good ol days.

I'll miss things like the deltaknight smashing his mouse on the desk coz he was sniped too much and power outage hijinx and all the other things that made actgn what it is/was. Online gaming is great but for me the lan is what it should be (kinda like the difference between watching the v8's on tv and actually going to the track).

Thanks to the admins for doing all the good work they've done over the years.

When I first heard the news about this, I just burst into tears. LANFest, NerdFest, and ACTGN have been the BEST parts of my life. I've met so many great ppl there who have become the best of mates. Everyone from GMan, Kato, Imp, Tin Reaper, Rob (I can never remember your nick these days) Peguin (when he was still around) Palidan McDog and everyone else.

Even in the darkest times of my life, I would always look forward to a LAN. I mean I will always remember the Nerf battles and the Nerf firing squad we had at the of the two CANCONs, and black out at the other. And now I guess we all look to the future, a future of sitting by ourselfs at home, playing online games. Wow what a crappy future....

Thank you so much to all the admins for all they're very hard work over the past 7 or 8 years that I've been going to these events. And thank you to everyone else who attended that made those LANs the best times of my life.

My best wishes to you all, and one day I hope we can all get together again and have a reunion LAN in the near future

Well, what can I say.. I'm fricken upset... I forgot to go to the last ever ACTGN lan :( Damn WoW.... I'm gonna cancel my subscription now.. argh!

Anyways, Thanks to all the admins and all the gamers who have been at the LAN's over the years. I have had many an enjoyable time at these. I remember the time there was a blackout at CANCON and someone started a game of ten pin bowling. There are alot of other memories, but since my memory sux, that's the only memory I can really remember at the moment. I'm just shattered.

Thumbs up to all and hope to see you online in a game :)

The decline and end of the ACTGN is quite unfortunate, but I can't forget the great times of the past. Many thanks to all the admins, and cheers to the gamers I've known and met through this group.

Its sad, although I have not been to an event in a long time. Every messageboard needs its answers-professor so as per usual I intend to step up to the plate.
ACTGN failed because (in rank of guilt)

1. Counter Strike. Seriously.
2. Counter Strike players.
3. HALO. Share the wealth, prize hogging pricks.
4. Summer fest. Not the cancon one. The other one, where you didnt get a seat near the door.
5. Rising availability and usability of Broadband.
6. Age. We're not 16 anymore. Jobs meant more careful rationing of free time.
7. Counter Strike.
8. I wanna make it to 10.
9. P2P. No honestly. Even though I leeched at LANs. Once P2P meant sharing 100GB of anime instead of sharing a few simpsons/futurama and funny video clips you had attendees there soley for data. Once upon a time data sharing was done in the wee hours of the morning. The last LAN I went to I walked out after 3 hours and went home to play RTCW:ET. Even though it was at the LAN. The reason? My ping was LOWER at home.
10. Lots of games are boring.

Btw I was serious about counter strike. Most LANs prior to counter strike we all played a fundamental game (Quake or whatever) then we're try new or wacky mods. Day of Defeat, Tron, Counter Strike, everything got tried and usually by most attendees. Once Counter-strike became a staple there was no point in a non-core player joining in. People lived and breathes CS, and they remained on the CS servers the entire LAN. This made it harder to find someone to play an RTS or alternate FPS with. Whereas UT/Q3/HL games usually were not so uncomfortable for a new player. Anyone can run around mashing buttons in those games and feel ok even if they suck. But CS it meant they played for 10 seconds out of every 5 minutes.

I amz teh n00b.

But thanks admins. Without you guys I wouldnt have a lot of my teen memories (*blush* *wave*). I hope it was worth it for you all too. Pretty slim profit margins in babysitting eh?

You can thank me for CS!!! lol...

If it wasn't for me introducing it, it wouldn't have got off the ground (as early as it did). The other admins never wanted anything to do with it!

The only reason I became an admin was to run the CS servers! :-)

Those were the days - beta 2 lol When the T's wore grey tracksuit pants and a red t shirt! hahaha

i dont think CS held lanning together at all. It held the CS people together, but everyone else went home.

In 2000 when it was basically a newish sorted game, i used to play it at lans, but then people kept playing it... at every lan, for the whole lan. People like myself got tired of it, and decided not to turn up any more.

Also, it was ALWAYS the CS kids that would NOT enter in a comp unless it was a HL based mod. I mean seriously, i used to go to lans with no idea what i was going to play. I could be about to play some UT, some SOF or maybe we might have a go of AVP.

Though in the end, it was a mixture of everything that killed the lan.

I think the lack of activity on the forum would of shown it was all over.

The thing i found most annoying was ppl who wanted to play cs but went into other games and tried to convert them into cs.

eg i set up a call of duty server (ironically called "not ww2 cs") and 5mins into the game i'd get a vote to change it to that crappy cs mode and when i changed it back and tell ppl if they want cs then they should leave coz i play team dm said ppl would vote to kick me from my own server.

While annoying a quick server kill did the trick and i don't believe any game could really be solely to blame for lanning going out. I think what happened was we got too big and then hit major problems with pli and other things also there was the whole big legal spiel u had to agree to to sign up and other things like shorter time limits (remember when it used to go from 9am to 6pm the next day??). all of a sudden the lan wasn't mates getting together to game it was an "event" and when broadband and things combined with it it just suddenly wasn't worth the effort anymore

The biggest factor for me not attending as many events was having broadband. I can still remember the lans at the ANU - Nothing like laning if 50 degrees temperatures it was better in winter i guess. In those days i had a dial up connections where we any online gaming was slooooow. So lanfest was a chance for to round up the guys and head out to an event where we can play games until our eyes hurt. Other factors included girlfriend, not knowing about events and work. I dont real think it was just CS.

Anyways you cant do much about it now thanks again to the admins for so great gaming.

Gday to kato long time no chat ill install icq again so we can catch up.

Echo, sif CS held em together. It caused huge fighting amongst the competing teams (I remember a cancon where there was heaps of drama over a CS tourny), it was a complete waste of time for a new player, and it was overall an anti-social game. Its worth noting, I view CS as the downfall of gaming everywhere in general.

Until CS, the mod game to play was Team fortress. Which meant people had worked together.
And for the record, I played CS from Beta04. I wasnt exactly a newb. I remember the first night CS headed to hell. A player named 'Vengabus' was being obnoxious on CS_Alley. Karade might recall this too. That was the first time I came across a player who trash talked and crippled his own team (wasnt my team) for the sake of doing it.

Hehe sorry if anyone already did that, *sigh* I can't believe ACTGN is already gone, I only had the chance to go to two of them. It was my reason to live...

Well if anyone knows of any other good LANs in Canberra where I can get my fix I'd be appreciating to know them. Good luck ACTGN leaders/owners/GMs, thank you for the best LAN in Canberra. Ye shall be remembered always.

Well, it was good while it lasted, and maybe one day, it'll rise from the dead.

Damn good times.

Thinking: Maybe we should start a ACT LAN mailing list, and keep ppl informed of other LANs, etc.

Got some Gigabit Switches, and I can always get some more Gigabit Switches :). Mobsta (NACTLAN) used one of ours at a NACTLAN as part of the backbone awhile ago (the same one where the water leak made part of the roof cave in).
Was at a TezzaLAN (some OFP, racing games, sound-vests, etc) with a few ppl awhile back too..... good memories.

The same NACTLAN where 10 ppl powered on at once, several times, and tripped the circuit breakers several times :P

Also got some deals going on Ati Radeon X800 XL cards (shade over $400 if anyone is interested - Great for Half-Life 2 / Source based games, also pretty good in Doom 3 engine for the price).... For those that don't know, I try to bulk order stuff for (small-medium LAN) groups of people so everyone gets something better for a decent price.

I'll be at the Old Bus Depo Computer Markets tomorrow, checking prices, & trying to undercut them (he he he)... Well today actually, it is SAT NOW, only a few hours to go.

Doubt many will remember me / us: (liked, Half-Life Orig + Most Mods, inc TFC, Quake(GL), Doom 1 & 2, www.FireArmsMod.com, Operation Flashpoint: MFCTI mod, and early CS Betas around 6.5, Jedi Knight 2 & 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein).

Some of the old GarageLAN, ACT group:
- Tabris / DarkPeace / QuadCore McSars
- Harvy.K / Anuuoooo(Smash)
- Armistal / Ecylpse
- Ethereal Guy / Quack Sawbones / Ramiel the Endarkened
(Used to play in South Canberra during high-school - college, group is still 'partially' alive, looking for other groups with similar tastes)

We would be happy to help out / merge with other LAN groups, but we play various games that some people may dislike. Mostly FPS though.

Still think 10/100/1000 Mbps LANs beat ADSL / TransACT cable, from a community perspective. (and even with max leechers can arrange for all to get sub 3 ms).

If such a mailing list does start, I can be contacted at:

Tabris.DarkPeace (Gaming Alias)
darkpeace@internode.on.net
http://users.on.net/~darkpeace (My not so dodgy webspace)

And no, with Internodes spam filter, I don't fear posting my é-mail address.

Well having moved down from the Gold Coast in mid 2001 where I used to run my own LANs (where a single 24-port switch would cover the lot). I quickly signed up with ACTGN and have attended the vast majority of events (I can remember missing only 2).

And as I write this it dawns on me, I haven't played a game in months! My XBOX is a media centre, my PC (with dual DTV cards) keeps me entertained, and my server once having a permanent Q3A server on it, now edumactes me on the finer points of Solaris 10 x86, Windows 2K3, and Fedora 4. I'm sure glad VMWare doesn't charge per VM.

Oh no, I've grown up :(
